Macaronis: one of the best lefts of the planet. It is top destination of every boat charter in the Mentawai's and more often than not you will find six boats anchored in front of it. Very consistent wave, breaking over a hundred and fifty days a year. Rolls for up to 100m. The wave is a perfect barrel on the take-off before walling up into a high performance oriented wave. It sits inside a picturesque bay with green water lapping its shores. Macaronis is usually smaller than everywhere else because of its protected position. This geographic filter fine tunes the swellThat would be half the size of Lance’s left and a third of the size of Thunders. Best winds are southeast /east/ northeast. The typical day usually starts with no wind, grows to a weak offshore southeast during the morning and rounds to an onshore southwest in the afternoon. So expect the best waves in the morning. Exceptions do occur and epic afternoon sessions with no wind can happen. Macaronis receives both South and Southwest ground swells, the lather is preferred. The wave works best from 3‘ to 6’. After 6’, macaronis doesn’t grow much in size but in volume. The drop begins to look like Teahupoo. Except for the fast drop, it’s an all level surfers wave. The reef is sharp and chances are you will touch it, but with no big consequences. Best tide medium, low too shallow. S-SW swells, SW best. SE-E winds.
The Hole: one heavy barrel. Fast wave suitable for advanced surfers. Beware with the wide sets that appear out of nothing catching everyone off guard. High tide seems to be even shallower as it breaks on a different part of the reef. The Hole is either a clean, easy exit or a close-out at the deadly end that will have consequences. S swells. SE winds. All tides. The Hole is one heavy barrel. Fast wave suitable for advanced surfers. Beware with the wide sets that appear out of nothing catching everyone off guard. BankVaults: heavy right that delivers some gnarly sections close to the inside. The line-up is shifty with waves breaking all over the place, but you will identify 2 main drop spots. The outside gives you the best , longest barrel and off course the hardest consequences if you don’t make it. The inside is safer with a nice quick tube. Works from 3’ to 15’. Bigger board required. S-SW swells, N wind , Medium to High tides.
Beng Beng: fun, ripable left that ends up closing out but offers plenty of time to get out. It’s not a barreling wave and offers a much more relaxed surf session compared to its neighbours. Good at 5’. SW swell, E-SE Winds, All tides, medium to high best.
Pitstops: fun right that ends up in a sand bar. Little barrel on the take off and then a ripable wall all the way to the beach. Aerials, 360s. Holds up to 5’, over that it turns into a close out. Incredible surroundings. Nice beach. SW swells. S-SE winds. All tides, medium-low best.
Hollow Trees: HT’s, Lance’s Right. Many names for this 5 star right reef break. Fast, perfect, barreling down the line type of wave. Hollow Trees comes from a dead tree trunk that once stood out on the reef. The waves wrap around the south end of Sipura Island, breaking in the protected east side of the island, the opposite from where the swell comes. There are two main take-off zones, but it's the deepest zone, called "The Office" that serves up the heaviest, scariest, roundest, most amazing barrels in the world. It is full speed down the line conecting both sections.“The Cage”, a wider-swinging walled-up peak that tubes on takeoff, but occasionally pinches shut. Ends in a relatively small area of the reef( 3 visible heads ) that stands out ready to slice you good. No wonder they call it “Surgeons Table”.The wave perfection is assisted by the Sumatran mainland's seabreeze, which creates a very light offshore most afternoons. Kind of wave you have to continuously adjust your board inside the barrel in order to make it. Frontside is a blast, backside is sketchy. The reef here is still untouched and alive, as you will notice the colorful carpet below. Extra care with even tiny cuts here as they will infect really easy. The waters here are unbelievably clear with a strong light blue tone that you won’t find anywhere else because of the protected position to open ocean. S-SW swells, SW best. SW best. High, medium tides. SW-W winds.
Mentawai is the ultimate playground for all levels of surfers. Lefts, rights, hollow, wall, mushy, long, short, every type of wave in a small chain of islands. Breaking over coral reef, the perfection surprises even the most experienced travelers.
